Cupping is often done in conjunction with acupuncture. I use either glass cups with a suction pump that creates a mild lifting of the tissue, or I use soft silicone cups that can also create a lifting or suction and are great around curved areas of the body. The cups are placed on the skin and can be left there for a few minutes or I apply massage oil and move the cups over the tight areas.
Cupping helps release tension and stiffness in the muscles and connective tissue, and thus improves circulation and toxin release. Sometimes because of the suction on tight and stagnant areas the cups can leave a temporary red mark or a bruise, which will dissipate as the area heals. It often feels very relaxing and pleasant as it acts to decompress tight areas.
