Treating children is very rewarding. This treatment is gentle and the kids respond so quickly. I love watching them brighten up and smile from the simple treatment. The idea of acupuncture for children can be difficult for some, but Japanese acupuncture has developed ways of treating children that are especially gentle, including specialist instruments that are touched or stroked on the skin. I do not generally use needles on children younger than 10 years old, after which I use contact needling without any insertion.
Children respond very well to acupuncture, as their energy has not had so much time to establish the out of balance position. As any parent knows, children change quickly, and so too does their energy. Because of this, when a child begins receiving acupuncture the treatment may be have to be delivered more frequently (reinforced), then as they “hold” the treatment, much less often. The treatment is fast, as their energy moves quickly. Children generally enjoy receiving acupuncture as they know they feel better. The first visit they may feel a bit wary, but I have found once they feel the effects, they get comfortable.
I have treated children with a range of problems, as the treatment is designed to bring the system into better balance and thus allow the child to heal themselves. From my own experience, acupuncture seems to be a good way to head off what can be more chronic situations. I have seen children who are getting upper respiratory infections regularly and those who get asthma every time they get a cold. The parents note that these stop happening so much after treatment. Amongst the conditions I have treated are:
